With the recent news of benzene contamination in over a dozen popular aerosol dry shampoo products, I wanted to share my top choices for all natural, benzene-free dry shampoos. To learn more about why it’s so important to avoid benzene, a cancer-causing chemical frequently found in aerosol-based cosmetics, check out my post about the recent recall. In addition to risk of benzene, many dry shampoos also include talc as an ingredient, which may be contaminated with asbestos fibers. Asbestos is so toxic to humans, that even second-hand exposure can be dangerous. Definitely not something we want to be applying to our scalps.

To keep yourself safe, your best bet is to avoid any products containing talc, as well as any aerosol-based products - this includes dry shampoos, sunscreens, spray-on deodorants, or anything in an aerosol spray container. As if we needed another reason, Science Mag released a study a few years back showing that our personal care aerosol products are adding a significant amount of air pollution that rivals L.A. car emissions.

Non-aerosol dry shampoos work largely the same as the aerosols you may be used to. Instead of spraying the product into your hair, you’ll apply the powder directly to your roots, massage it into your scalp to absorb the oils, and comb through to disperse and remove any excess powder.
